CHP Officer Seriously Injured in San Gabriel Pedestrian Accident on 10 Freeway at New Avenue
San Gabriel, California (June 22, 2020) – A California Highway Patrol officer was hit and injured in a chain-reaction crash on Sunday afternoon in San Gabriel, near Alhambra and Monterey Park, authorities said.
The crash happened at about 1:25 p.m., on June 21, on the westbound 10 Freeway at New Avenue.
As per the police report, the officer had parked his 2013 Ford Police Interceptor Utility Vehicle behind a 2013 BMW and was on the right shoulder of the road.
A Scion FR-S reportedly made an unsafe lane change from the No.2 to No.3 lane, cutting off a 2008 Toyota Rav4. The Rav4 driver, a 32-year-old woman, applied her brakes and swerved to avoid colliding with the Scion, which caused her to lose control and hit the officer’s SUV.
The crash impact pushed the CHP’s SUV into the rear of the BMW.
The officer, a 32-year-old man, was hit in the mishap. He was transported to County USC Medical Center with major injuries.
Drugs or alcohol were not believed to have played a role in the accident.
Following the accident, the roadway was closed temporarily, and as of 3:50 p.m., the roadway was reopened.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact the East Los Angeles CHP Office at 323-980-4600.
