Bernardo Valdez Identified as Victim Killed in Escondido Crash on Harmony Grove Road near Wild Willow Hollow Road

San Diego County, California (February 4, 2020) – The person who died in a three-vehicle crash that happened Friday morning in Escondido has been identified as Bernardo Valdez, 28, of Escondido, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The fatal accident took place in the 8500 block of Harmony Grove Road, just west of Wild Willow Hollow Road at about 7:40 a.m. Friday, January 31.

According to the CHP, a Subaru WRX was heading westbound on Harmony Grove Road when it veered into an eastbound lane, where it sideswiped an oncoming Toyota Prius.

The Subaru then collided head-on with a Toyota Highlander SUV. Due to the impact, the Highlander overturned.

Valdez, who was the driver of the Subaru, died at the scene.

The driver of the Highlander, Ardeshir Tooraji, 38, of Carlsbad, and his three passengers, a 26-year-old man, and two women, ages 34 and 38, all of San Marcos, sustained minor injuries. Responding paramedics treated them at the scene.

The driver of the Prius, a 49-year-old San Marcos man, was uninjured.

The CHP officers determined that the Highlander was stolen. Tooraji was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and possession of stolen property.

Authorities closed Harmony Grove near Wild Willow Hollow Road as a result of the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by the CHP.
